La Cage aux Folles, the 1993 Broadway musical comedy, has music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and a book by Harvey Fierstein. It's the only show the two men collaborated on, though individually their many successes include, for Herman, Hello, Dolly!, Mame and Mack and Mabel, and for Fierstein (who's also an actor), Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray. Following a run earlier this year at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Terry Johnson's revival of La Cage, starring Douglas Hodge, now transfers to the West End's Playhouse Theatre. Michael Coveney talks to the two Broadway legends.
