The Cambridge and Guidlhall School of Music and Drama graduate is also an award-winning composer. He received a BAFTA award for his score of the BBC’s adaptation of Jane Auten’s Persuasion, as well as an Ivor Novello award for his film score of Ian Ewan’s Enduring Love.
Sams (pictured left) said he was “particularly honoured” to receive the doctorate “from an academic institution in which music and theatre are given such support and prominence.”
His work as a director includes numerous shows in the west end, including his adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, which starred Danielle Hope at the Palladium. He also directed The Sound of Music at the same theatre, as well as Michael’s Frayn’s Noises Off which transferred to Broadway. He wrote the book and lyrics for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Amour which ran on Broadway.
Sams has worked with major companies such as The Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre, most notably on Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia and Alan Bennett’s Wind in the Willows.
Birmingham’s Symphony Hall will host the ceremony on Tuesday 12th February where Sams will accept the honour.
