    Matt Smith has taken on one of the biggest roles in television, and 7.7 million fans watched him do it.

    Following in the footsteps of David Tennant was never going to be easy, but Matt Smith has stepped up to the role that has made him a household name with assurance.

    The BBC has confirmed that 7.7 million viewers watched his first episode on Saturday night, a vast 36.9% share of total television watched.

    The response has widely been a positive one, with fans and critics alike supporting the youngster ever Doctor.

    The episode entitled The Eleventh Hour saw Smith's Doctor save the world in a matter of 20 minutes, with new sidekick Amy Pond played by Karen Gillan.

    The next episode can be seen on BBC1 on Saturday 10th April at 6.15pm.
