Last month actress Carey Mulligan told an American newspaper that she was rejected from every drama school she auditioned for.

Mulligan, the British star who has a string of hit movies behind her including An Education (pictured), said how she also felt like a “terrible actor” on occasion.

In an interview with The New York Times’ Arts & Leisure Weekend, she revealed how it may have been her audition material that failed her:

“I did Psychosis 448, a monologue about someone who is about to commit suicide, as my audition speech,” she said. “So there’s this incredibly well-adjusted, happy person coming from boarding school and I’m miming slitting my wrists on stage.

“They were like, ‘Go home! Or at least experience something other than boarding school’. So that’s what I did.”

Drama Centre London apparently told Mulligan she should be a “children’s TV presenter”.
