Rupert Goold leaves Headlong for Almeida
Rupert Goold has been confirmed as the new Artistic Director of the Almeida Theatre.
Add a commentSky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund – The Judging - www.ideastap.comGoold will step down as the Artistic Director of Headlong in autumn 2013 after eight years, having enjoyed critical and award-winning success with the theatre company. Under his direction, Headlong has received 46 award nominations and 12 wins including an Olivier Award, Evening Standard Award and Critics Circle Award. Rupert has been twice been the recipient of the Laurence Olivier, Critics’ Circle and Evening Standard awards for Best Director.
It is seen as somewhat of a scoop for the Almedia who will bid farewell to current Artistic Director Michael Attenborough.
Goold said that Headlong had been his “passion” and that the relationships he has forged there will stay with him forever. “That we have taken provocative new work up and down the country, to the West End, and abroad, and above all that we have brought through a wonderful array of new theatre artists and practitioners makes me very proud. I would like to thank the board and my exceptional staff for all their support and hope that I can continue to help and share this great company’s future life.”
Rupert’s last production for Headlong will be American Psycho, The Musical, a co-production with the Almeida, which opens in Autumn 2013. Headlong will also be co-producing Lucy Kirkwood’s new play Chimerica at the venue in May.
The search for a new Artistic Director of Headlong is expected to happen immediately.
